20121017-124627.jpgToday is a good day.

Outside, it feels like gorgeous fall weather. Not too hot, not too cold. Just like last Sunday, when a friend I met while studying abroad in England came to visit from New York. Together, with Olivia, we comprised the moccasins crew, as pictured above. Those cozy shoes are perfect for chilly weather.

Also today, I was able to snatch a free spot on the cozy couch in Tree City Coffee and Pastry during my lunch break to relax and enjoy their tasty peach jasmine iced tea.

I have this weekend to look forward to, including more time with friends and family, my first 5K and some catch-up time with one of my favorite Medina teachers.

But I also have this evening to enjoy a much-needed dinner at Ray’s with some Kent friends. A cozy meal and a beer is the perfect way to end a great fall day.

What is your favorite part about fall?

Fall into fall imagery

It’s great to have the ability and time to work ahead, but even if that was the case for me, creating cards and scrapbook pages out of season just wouldn’t be the same. Even Christmas in July wouldn’t distract me from the beautiful (occasional) northeast Ohio sunshine and warm weather to get ahead on my Christmas card collection.

Just as I usually make Christmas cards only in December (generally the two weeks before Christmas or so), I like to scrapbook photos during the season in which they happened. It’s hard to create a page that represents your true memories when your current surroundings distract you from what you saw, felt or heard in that particular moment.

So what do you think of when you think about fall? Which images come to mind when you remember the season from years past? When brainstorming layouts, color schemes and embellishments to use on both pages and cards, it might be helpful to first grasp an idea of the image you’d like to portray.

Fall colors

  • Reds
  • Oranges
  • Yellows
  • Browns
  • Beige
  • Maroon
  • Plum

Fall foods

  • Pumpkin pie, pumpkin rolls, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin cookies…
  • Apple pie, apple crisp, caramel and candy apples, apple cider
  • Halloween candy
  • Candy corn
  • Cinnamon doughnuts
  • Kettle corn (are you hungry yet?)

Fall sights

  • Colorful leaves
  • Pumpkin patches
  • Hay stalks
  • Leaf piles and rakes
  • Flannel shirts
  • Morning frost
  • Football games

Fall feelings

  • Cool breezes
  • Crisp air
  • Crunchy leaves
  • Warm jackets and blankets

What’s your ideal image of the perfect fall day?

Nostalgia: “a sentimental yearning”

Fall makes me feel nostalgic. Like I’ve said, it’s my favorite time of the year; I love the weather, the colors of the trees and I can look forward to my birthday and many other great events during the coming months. Fall reminds me of these great memories from years before, much like the pages of my scrapbooks.

nostalgia [no-stal-juh, -jee-uh, nuh-], noun:

1. a wistful desire to return in though or in fact to a formertime in one’s life, to one’s home or homeland, or to one’s familys and friends; a sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place or time: a nostalgia for his college days.

2. something that elicits or displays nostalgia.

After my first full week of classes, I realize I’ll be busy this semester, but I’ll try my best to fit in some scrapbooking during any spare time I have. Here are some pages I’ve worked on so far this summer:

Summertime scrapbook page“Summertime” | This page will appear in a high school graduation gift for my brother, Matt. The pictures were taken when I was about six years old; we’re playing in the turtle sand box in the backyard. (Remember those?) These outdoor photos remind me of the sunflowers my dad used to plant in his garden, which I tried to portray on the page as well.

“Monster Ball” | I’ll use this page in the college years scrapbook I will eventually complete. I tried my best to depict the outrageous nature of Lady Gaga–her costumes, her character, her fans. What do you think?Lady Gaga concert scrapbook page

“New York City” | This is the second page of a two-page layout from my spring break trip to NYC in March. Of course, I had (too) many photos to work with, so I tried a collage approach. Collage layouts take longer to complete because they require more planning and measuring. However, sometime’s it’s just too difficult to leave certain photos out. Doesn’t that Crumbs cupcake look delicious?
